Melbourne is famous for many things, but not nudity. Now, I have been living in All Nations Backpackers for quite some time now, and getting nude doesn’t always shock the people anymore. It may shock many other Melbourne Backpackers, but not here at All Nations. Anyhow, a few months ago, Karl and I challenged ourselves, we had a big target to reach in the bar, and at the time it seemed extremely dificult. But should we reach the target, Karl and I would swim across the Yarra river, fully naked. However, what with Spring Racing Carnival, the Australia V England game and awsome support from all fantastic staff, the target was reached. And the day came where we had to man up and pants down. The Yarra river has a swimming ban on it. It is heavily polluted from all the CBD runnoff, many water vessels occupy the river, and it is extremly cold, so Karl decided that we do it during the day. Guessing that we would most probably be arrested, I decided that we should do it right in the heart of Southbank, possibly the most populated bit of the river where we could have gone.
We assembled a small team of backpackers from All Nations Hostel, no doubt keen to see possibly the most outrageous thing they would witness in Australia. We parked the All Nations bus beneath the Eureka Tower, tallest building in Melbourne and streaked through southbank at a steady and proud pace. As i approached the edge of the bankment, Thoughts rushed to the head as to what type of dive I was going to do, there isn’t many occasions when I am going to be filmed by multiple cameras entering a major river of a capital city, in the nude, the dive had to be pretty sensational. And I’m not talking a tripple backfilp half pike with minimal splash factor (scores 9, 9.5, and 10 from the gallery.) But at the very least a proper big front flip would be obligitory. Anyhow, we did it, there were flips, Karl stunned us all with a full massive backflip without warning. We swam across to the awaiting towels on the other side and we didn’t even get arrested! It was quite the achievment, and all I can think of now is, ‘hmm, what are we going to do next time?’ alas felow Melbourne Backpackers, you will no doubt be the first to know!
