Nomads Fat Camel Backpackers Hostel preparing for World Environment Day

Nomads Fat Camel Backpackers Hostel in Auckland is preparing itself for World Environment Day; 5th June. New Zealand is hosting this worldwide event this year so we’re all very excited to be helping to make a difference.

World Environment Day 2008 is all about reducing your carbon footprint.

Nomads Fat Camel Backpackers Hostel are doing their bit on the 5th June by having

  1. a no lift day (Auckland backpackers with heavy bags will still be able to use the lift - but we will be encouraging everyone to use the stairs that day)
  2. a no printing day
  3. a candle-lit evening in the reception area and the Fat Camel backpackers bar

This is all in addition to the measures we already have in place and / or are working towards…

  1. signs next to every light switch encouraging people to switch them off when they leave the room
  2. signs above every sink recommending that our Auckland backpackers switch the tap off whilst brushing their teeth
  3. signs on every kettle asking the backpackers to fill the kettle with only as much water as they need
  4. recycling bins in each and every apartment (these are due to arrive next week)
  5. recycling boxes for all used and unused phonecards and drink vouchers at the reception desk
  6. we’re reducing our paper usage by using chalkboards more effectively

We’re also raising money so that we can plant trees to offset our carbon footprint. If you’d like to donate money or if you’d like to come with Nomads Fat Camel Backpackers Hostel Staff and guests to plant trees, please email us at the youth hostel.

If you have any other ideas that we can implement at Nomads Fat Camel Backpackers Hostel please email us as we’re very keen to do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint.
